In the United States, there are more than 150 types of visas which allow a person to travel to, and remain in the country. However, these are all classified as either immigrant visas or nonimmigrant visas. The difference, as the name suggests, is the reason for the person’s visit to the United States. If you are attempting to immigrate to the U.S., you will need an immigrant visa. If you are visiting for vacation or business, a nonimmigrant visa will likely apply.
Nonimmigrant Visas
Nonimmigrant visas will cover anyone who is visiting the United States for a temporary purpose. This could include professional athletes, a crewmember of a plane or ship, a student, or simply a tourist. There are some rare exceptions, but most visitors to the United States will need a nonimmigrant visa. The most commonly issued nonimmigrant visas are for students and businesspeople.
Immigrant Visas
Although immigration is a common goal of those who apply for immigrant visas, there are a number of different reasons why they may be doing so. For this reason, there are a large number of different immigrant visas. For example, there are separate visa categories for a spouse of a U.S. citizen and the fiancée of a U.S. citizen. Employment-based permanent visas are capped at 140,000 per year, and people who meet certain conditions will usually be given priority. This includes people who have advanced degrees, ambassadors or religious workers, and those who will be creating 10 or more jobs.
